Evacuees for a day...

Special Events

Dear Mother and Father,
I still can't believe war has broken out. It wasn't so long ago that we were all listening to the wireless when suddenly there was an announcement saying that we were at war with Germany. Soon after that of course, we were evacuated...
The journey was horrendous - we had to stop three times for water and twice for moving into the sidetracks because of trains carrying soldiers - though it was very exciting looking at all the wildlife. I have seen animals called cows that make a weird noise, "Moo." There are also some animals called sheep which look a bit like clouds. Alfie said that they are clouds in disguise.

When we arrived at our station Mr. Wilkins told us to get out with our bags. There was a woman called Janice waiting for us, who greeted us and sent us inside.
As we went inside we could see many adults looking at us. Don't worry - me and Max stayed together and eventually got picked with Josh.
The man who chose us was a teacher called Phillip. He is married and has three children, although they are a lot older than us. He lives in a bungalow and guess what? He has a car!
His house has a lot of antiques like ancient coins and fossils. He has a wireless which we listen to in his living room. The only bad thing, though, is that we share a toilet with our next door neighbour.
We have to go to school in the morning, which is a shame because I thought that now we are at war we wouldn't have to go to school. What makes it worse is that my foster dad is the teacher!

Have you heard that the Germans might drop mustard gas? I don't want anything to happen to you, so promise me you will be careful...
We still have drills here, but the siren is a lot louder because the town is a lot more spread out.

We really miss you and your apple crumble. Love you loads.
Yours truly,
Harris and Max.
