HERALD CUP 2009
This July's Herald Cup final was Greatstone's fifth final appearance, the fourth in the last five years - a record passed by no other primary school in Shepway.
The team had cruised to the final, having the experience of 9 players from the previous season's final. The final was again held at The Harvey Grammar School's ground. Our opponents were Sandgate School and as soon as the game started, it was sure that they were a very strong, physical side.
We started the game slowly and were very much on the back foot when Sandgate opened the scoring. Within a few minutes they had found the back of the net again only for the referee to disallow the goal. The second half began better for us and Parrie Torres -our captain -pulled back our equaliser. With a few minutes left in the game, a mistake at the back allowed the Sandgate centre forward to hit a winner-we had lost 2-1.
Full credit must go to our little school who have led the way with sport this year- a total honour to be involved, with our parental help of the Mr Palmers.
A gap of a few years now before we can challenge again for trophies, so bring on the youngsters.
WELL DONE GREATSTONE F.C.
N.A.S. KENT CUP FINAL
The girls in the football team are Kent Champions!
They played brilliantly in the N.A.C. Kent Cup Final at Gravesend on Tuesday 14th July 2009, taking the lead in the first half with a goal from Emma Gunton. They held on to their lead until the second half, when Amhurst scored very early on. It was still 1 - 1 after full time and extra time, so it was decided that the trophy should be shared.
Congratulations girls - what a season you've had!
S.E. England Regional 7 a-side Finals
On Saturday 28th March 2009 Greatstone Primary Girls Football Team travelled by coach with their teachers and supporters to the S.E. England Regional 7 a-side Finals held at The London Marathon Ground Greenwich, London, in the hope of reaching the Finals which are being held at Wembley Stadium in June.
Representing Shepway PSFA and Kent SFA, the girls immediately came across stiff opposition.
The following scores resulted:
The standard of the girl teams representing their counties was extremely high. The girls from Greatstone played with skill, courage and team spirit, giving a very good account of themselves, but they were beaten by better players. The journey was exciting and worthwhile and again put the little school from the Romney Marsh well on the footballing map of Kent and S.E.England.
