School Values
Our Vision – The Greatstone Way
At Greatstone Primary School, we believe every child deserves an education that inspires them to succeed, helps them discover who they are and prepares them to make a positive difference in the world.
Our vision is brought to life through The Greatstone Way—our shared approach to learning, personal development and community. It shapes every aspect of school life, from our curriculum and teaching to the relationships we build, the opportunities we provide and the ambitions we hold for every child.
The Greatstone Way is rooted in three simple values:
Care
We care for ourselves, for one another and for the world around us. We create a school where everyone feels safe, respected, included and valued. Kindness, empathy and belonging are at the heart of our community, helping every child develop confidence and strong relationships.
Dream
We encourage every child to dream big and believe in their own potential. Through an ambitious curriculum, inspiring experiences and high expectations, we help children develop the knowledge, skills and confidence to achieve more than they ever thought possible.
Dare
We give children the courage to take on new challenges, solve problems, think creatively and learn from mistakes. By developing resilience, independence and perseverance, we prepare them to embrace opportunities both in school and throughout their lives.
The Greatstone Way in Action
Our vision is underpinned by six learning principles that children experience throughout their journey from Nursery to Year 6.
Belonging – Every child feels welcomed, valued and proud to be part of our school family.
High Expectations – We believe every child can achieve success through effort, ambition and determination.
Adaptive Teaching – We recognise that every learner is different and provide the support and challenge needed for every child to flourish.
Inclusion – We celebrate individuality and ensure everyone can participate, contribute and succeed.
Community – We develop responsible citizens who care for their local community, the environment and the wider world.
Relationships – We build positive partnerships with families and nurture respectful, supportive relationships that enable children to thrive.
These principles are woven through our curriculum, enrichment opportunities, Beach School, assemblies, leadership roles and everyday experiences. Together they help children become curious learners, confident communicators, thoughtful citizens and compassionate individuals who are ready for the next stage of their education and life beyond Greatstone
Learning Together Through Our Whole-School Themes
Each half term, every class across the school explores a shared whole-school theme through learning that is appropriate for their age and stage of development. While every year group studies different knowledge and skills, children are united by a common big question that encourages discussion, curiosity and collaboration across the school.
Our six themes—Roots, Survivors, Explorers, Inventors, Protectors and Legacy—provide meaningful contexts for learning throughout the year. Each theme begins with an exciting hook, is enriched through Beach School, educational visits, outdoor learning and community experiences, and concludes with an authentic showcase where children celebrate and share their learning with families and the wider community.
This shared approach creates a genuine sense of belonging. Children talk confidently about their learning with pupils in other year groups, older children support younger learners, and the whole school develops a common language around our values, learning principles and big ideas. As children move through the school, they revisit these themes in increasingly sophisticated ways, helping them make connections, deepen understanding and recognise how their learning builds over time.
At Greatstone Primary School, we do more than prepare children for tests or the next year group. Through The Greatstone Way, we prepare them for life—helping every child to Care, Dream and Dare as they grow into confident, curious and compassionate learners.
By the time they leave us, we want every Greatstone Graduate to be kind and respectful, ambitious for themselves and others, resilient when things are difficult, curious about the world, confident to express their ideas, independent in their learning and courageous enough to try something new. They understand the importance of belonging and inclusion, know how to build positive relationships and recognise their responsibility to care for their community and the wider world.
Equipped with strong foundations in knowledge and skills, alongside the character and confidence to use them, our Greatstone Graduates are ready for the next stage of their education and prepared to make a positive difference wherever their journey takes them.
